I've said more than once that there's a small part of me that wishes Stephen King had published "11/22/63" under his alias Richard Bachman because there are many that have a strong reaction to him and simply refuse to read anything he's written.  What a mistake that would be.  In this book, Jake Epping has discovered what he calls a rabbit hole in time.  After taking a test trip, Jake decides to go back to stop Lee Harvey Oswald from killing JFK.  One problem is that this rabbit hole takes him back to 1958 so he has to live in the past until it is time to get Oswals.  Stephen King is an extraordinary tale teller and his story about Jake and his travel is well worth reading.  I've had more than one customer thank me for convincing them to read this book.  It's amazing.

For those of us missing baseball already, and even for those who are not fans, Chad Harbach's first novel is a breath of spring.   Set on the shores of Lake Michigan at fictional Westish college, "The Art of Fielding" is as much a story of choice and self-confidence as it is of baseball.  Henry Skrimshander arrives at the school a scrawny but amazingly talented short stop who has been recruited by BMOC and catcher Mike Schwartz.  Henry goes on a long journey from a record setting errorless streak to a complete meltdown. His trip, along with his teammates and the president of the college make for a very compelling and poignant story for readers of all kinds.  This is a great read for those who love baseball and even for the uninitiated.

"REAMDE" has it all....a virutal world, a chase to stop terrorists and good romances.  This book is not just for the computer geek (though they will like it).  It goes from Canada to China to the great virtual land of T'Rain.  It's really fast moving, given it's size of over 1000 pages. Don't be intimidated.  It's worth the effort.

Even adults can use some magic in their lives .  Ms. Morgenstern provides that in her debut novel "The Night Circus".   In the late 1800's, two established magicians pit their apprentices against each other to determine who is the best magician.  The setting is a circus that only arrives at night.  There is a fierce competition, an emotional love story and - of course- a lot of magic.

This is a spell-casting novel.

What would happen if those in the future decided they needed to guarantee their Perfect Present?  They would have agents like Zed who come back in time to make sure that the events that happened continue to happen, even though the HAG's (History Agitators) are trying to change the past.  It's a fascinating read.

"The Tower, The Zoo, and The Tortoise" by Julia Stuart is a brilliantly charming and funny novel.  Balathazar Jones and his wife Hebe live in the Tower of London with their 181 year old pet tortoise Mrs. Cook.  Balthazar is a Beefeater and they really do live in the Tower.  The rest of the cast of characters is an eccentric mix that you'll just love.  There is also a poignancy to this story that will touch your heart.  Don't miss this one.  It's one of the best out there! Now available in paper and still one of my favorites.

I have just discovered Kate Morton and like her alot.  "The Distant Hours" is a wonderful story that begins when Edie's mother recieves a letter that should have been delivered 50 years ago.  This sends Edie on a journey into the past.  She discovers that her mother lived in the countryside during WWII.  AS she delves deeper, the story of the sisters her mother lived with deepens.  This is a good story of long buried family secrets and the twists of fate that can bring people together or crush their hopes forever.  If you like this one, check out "The Forgotten Garden" and "The House at Riverton" also by Ms. Morton.  She can tell a good tale.

If you like Dan Brown and conspiracy theory stories, make sure you read "The Thousand" by Kevin Guilfoile.  Instead of the Illuminati ruling the world, we have a group dedicated to the mathematical theories of Pythagoras running things behind the scenes.  Canada Gold has been living in Las Vegas and using her uncanny mental abilities.  She is drawn back to Chicago to solve her father's murder and figure out how it is connected to the Thousand, the group who follow Pythagoras.  It is a fascinating mystery with a rivetiing use of Chicago as its back-drop.
