Allison

I simply love the act of reading, and I will read anything, including the cereal box (which I have noticed advertising books lately!).  From the few mysteries I read each year to the many kids books that clutter my bedside table, my tastes tend to lean toward the comedic or light novels that have happy endings but good depth at the same time.

My nieces and nephews in the picture shown are very important to me, and many of my picks are books I have read with them! Annie is 12 and an avid reader; the books she's been talking most about recently are "Witch and Wizard" by James Patterson and "Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. Christopher and Katy are the twins of the family, 10 years old now!, who love the Matt Christopher books, the "Little House on the Prairie" series, as well as the "Judy Moody" & "Stink" books by MacDonald. Lauren (Lulu:) is 6 already, and is a little lover of "Mercy Watson" and reading picture books to her younger cousins.  Her newest favorite is "Ivan the Terrier" Nate the Great is 7 and becoming a strong reader with a hearty library; we started off on the "We Both Read" series where I had a page to read, and then it was his turn. Ashley, a spunky 5 year old, loves Bible stories and memorized an entire book in rhyme, "The Big Tidyup" when she was 3. Nicole is our little rebel at only 3 years old, but she will always behave for a story from her aunt. Luke has hardly sat for one minute since learning to walk, but at 18 months, he loves to lift a flap or two. And Suzie (not pictured, just over 6 months old) will be read "Goodnight Moon" to over this, her first holiday season, as her cousin Annie was read that same book 12 years ago.

"Farm to Fork"

Emeril is one of those pioneering TV chefs that makes me want to eat.  In his new cookbook he tackles the topical new issue of eating locally sustainable products.  In light of our recurring problems with food from China, this is a very good suggestion.  Check out our local Farmer's Market every Wednesday at OLB on Dundee. Follow this link to read more: Northbrook Farmer's Market

I can't wait to try some of the recipes in this book.  He startw with the herb garden and then goes through dairy, leafy greens, and what he calls "the three sisters": corn, beans and squash. Yum.  With over 300 pages, the recipes turn to some interesting ingredients like nightshades, winterfruits, and thistles! But Emeril is deeply rooted in  cooking with the ripest ingredients from every season.

Emeril dedicates the book to "all those fishermen who keep on keepin' on"; it kills me inside to think of how he is reacting to the oil spill in his "backyard".

"Medium Raw"

Bourdain has a reputation, and with every episode of his show "No Reservations", he upholds that reputation.  He holds nothing back in his opinions of food, and though his tastes don't line up with my own, I respect what he says.

In his new book, "Medium Raw", he continues on his no-holds-barred culinary viewpoints and entertaining anecdotes.  From his days as a chef at Les Halles in New York to his life now as a TV celebrity  and food critic, he recalls his humble beginnings and brings us behind-the-scenes of his life among fine chefs.

"Impossible to Easy" by Robert Irvine

As you can tell with all these cookbook recommendations, I am somewhat of a "foodie".  I let my husband do all the cooking at home (he's so much better at it than I am), but we watch the Food Network, Bravo, and the Travel Channel cooking shows all the time.

In Robert Irvine's show, "Dinner Impossible", he takes on catering projects that should take months of planning and preparation, but he has only mere hours in which to complete them.  It makes for very entertaining programming, and his recipes are all AMAZING.

In 5 pages, the Table of Contents listing the recipes in his new book will have your mouth watering and your shopping list filling up.  Try any of these "111 Delicious Recipes to Help you Put Great Meals on the Table Every Day".

"Bedwetter" by Sarah Silverman

I have recently been re-watching Sarah's show from Comedy Central "The Sarah Silverman Show", and it is hilarious.  As this new book suggests, she is NEVER above bathroom humor.  She plays the most selfish, inconsiderate, rude and silly character in her comedy, but if you let yourself laugh at it, oh boy, it is funny!

"Seven Dirty Words"

Having recently passed away, this title refers to an old comedy routine of Carlin's.  According to Wikipedia:

"The seven dirty words are seven English-language words that comedian George Carlin first listed in 1972 in his monologue "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television". At the time, the words were considered highly inappropriate and unsuitable for broadcast on the public airwaves in the United States, whether radio or television. As such, they were avoided in scripted material, and bleep-censored in the rare cases in which they were used; broadcast standards differ in different parts of the world, then and now, although most of the words on Carlin's original list remain taboo on American broadcast television as of 2010. The list was not an official enumeration of forbidden words, but rather was compiled by Carlin. Nonetheless, a radio broadcast featuring these words led to a Supreme Court decision that helped establish the extent to which the federal government could regulate speech on broadcast television and radio in the United States."

I had the experience of seeing Carlin live with my husband in 2000 at Chicago's Navy Pier, thanks to the American Bookseller's Associatino and the BEA (Book Expo America).  People were getting up and leaving the audience because some of Carlin's jokes are so controversial and make people mad.  Sometimes, when life is the hardest, we still have to be able to laugh at ourselves.

When Joyce lent me her copy of "The Cradle" and I finished it, I immediately needed to text her to ask if I could lend it to my sisters.  She started a chain of readers who were touched by this wonderful Midwestern story that weaves around searching for, and ultimately finding, family and hope.  Pick up this satisfying read for yourself or give it to a special friend.

Our main characters are a couple of young people; the wife, seven months pregnant, has made up her mind that she wants back the cradle whe was rocked in as a baby.  Problem: the cradle disappeared along with her mother many years ago.  The young husband will seek out what she desires but is uncertain what he will find along the way.

"boom!" by Mark Haddon

From the author of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime", comes a book he wrote many years ago.  Re-published now, it is a funny story of two teenage boys who discover their teachers are ALIENS.  As the uncover more and more secrets, they are more and more at risk until they become so captured that their sister has to save them! How embarrassing! And how funny! I was drawn into the story right away and couldn't wait to see it through to the end.

"The Passage"

This summer's hot read is from quiet, literary author Justin Cronin.  Quite different from his previous works, a salesman for the publisher of this new "vampire" adventure (Ballantine) told us Cronin wrote this with his teenage daughter who told her dad his other books were boring.  I read in a published article that Cronin and his daughter did jointly come up with the storyline on their daily jogs/bicycle rides together.

After the Army project to create a super-soldier goes terribly awry, the United States is unrecognizable as we know it.  The Army was trying to create a soldier who can heal himself on the battlefield, saving money, time and missions for our goverment.  What they created instead were monsters very much like a vampire, flying through the air, feasting on humans, and turning them into 'virals' as well. There are so many words used for these monsters in the book that it never feels like you are reading about the vampires of old: flyers, virals, smokes.  Luckily, the Army finally got the virus right before the whole project blew up in their faces.

It is an exciting read with potential for many sequels; I highyl recommend it to anyone wanting to get lost in a world unlike our own.  As I sat staring out at my beautiful perennial garden reading about the world coming to an end, I thought to myself, "I love this book."
