This Thursday, we had a special event at the Book Bin. Jeri Smith, who has taught preschool, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade, and is currently a literacy consultant, discussed how to guide children to reading by introducing the basics. Do you hang things in the house for kids to read and look at? Ask yourself this: is it at your eye level or at their eye level? Children learn to read over a long period; first, they watch you read, then you read with them, and finally they do it themselves. These things are needed for a basis for reading: Phonetic Awareness, a grasp of the Alphabet, and good verbal skills. P.E.E.R.- Begins with Prompting. Ask them what they see on the cover of the book, and when they answer correctly you validate it and expand upon it. Children learn best with the three R's: Rhythm, Rhyme, and Repetition. Jeri's three R's also include : READ to your child, REACH into your wallet for new books, and RULE over the television.
